of them in turn and then we ll begin the discussion. george hawley is associate professor of political science at the university of alabama. his research interests include religion, electoral behavior, political parties and the conservative movement in america. he earned his ph.d. in political science from the university of houston and undergraduate degrees from central washington university. he s best known for his book published by columbia university press in 2017. in that book, whatever sense that can be made of the alt-right is made and quite clearly so. reviews of this, i was delighted to discover, were mixed on amazon. one person objects that, quote, the book is nothing more than a long series of intentional lies, there is nothing about the alt-right that is white supremacist or racist. the movement has nothing to do with race. that seems clear to me. another said, nothing but leftist or communist propaganda. having met professor hawley, he strikes me as reasonably inn
the alt-right rose to prominence in the minds of many americans during the 2016 u.s. presidential election cycle and also during the violent events in charlottesville, virginia, in august 2017. an array of commentary across many academic disciplines have analyze various aspects of this group. today s effort is to begin to examine what role or rolls religion or religious might be playing in the all-white movement and to suggest further lines of academic inquiry on the religious aspects of this phenomenon. we have three panels scheduled all of which will follow the same format. each panelist will speak for ten minutes followed by about 30 minutes of crosstalk among the panelists and then will pivot to the audience for 30 minutes question and answers and will take a 15 minute break between each of the panels. so my job is to introduce our three panelists for the first discussion. sitting immediately next to me is professor damon berry, an assistant professor of religious studi
