of that. the second thing is the inspector general who is a career official at the justice department has made this criminal referral, that s a very important step, it s a dangerous step obviously for mr. mccabe, but it shows that these guardrails are working, that these accountability mechanisms as director comey said are in fact in place. i think that should be a great assurance to the american people. the third thing that jumps out at me is that the president has hired a brilliant lawyer. of course, everybody knows that america s mayor is a lawyer, but i would tell you this based on my personal experience with rudy giuliani, there s probably no better lawyer in the united states to handle this kind of very high-profile situation. martha: very interesting. i want to go in on a moment for andrew mccabe and james comey, because they re going after each other here in the president just said as much in the tweet that he put out, he felt that james comey had thrown andrew mccabe
mccabe, is convicted is jailed, he d be a less available witness to say the least. i want to tell you something, tonight, it looks like we are entering into the truly uncharted territory. now the news was breaking as james comey sat for one of his many book interviews today where he addressed the allegation that his former deputy lacked candor. i ve read the report. i m not the judge in the case. i m not the discipline decision-maker in the case. i think it is accountability mechanisms, working and they should work. because it s not acceptable in the fbi or the justice department for people to lack candor. not acceptable to lack candor. he s referring to the personnel report. the charges issue is the new big thing. mccabe, of course, had assumed james comey s job after trump fired comey. and mccabe kept his own memos about donald trump, surely of interest to the white house and he assured congress his loyalty
it s really a mix of a couple of things but two things stood out for me not only in the report but in the things that have followed up. it s really the lack of leadership from the political class. you know, this past election cycle, color of change, a number of other organizations were very involved in getting rid of the attorney general, anita alvarez, and replacing her with someone who ran on the reform platform. from the former state s attorney anita alvarez, to rahm emanuel himself, we ve seen a lack of leadership of elected officials at seeing their responsibility and holding police accountable and putting in the time of reforms and accountability measures. simply talking about training or talking about things without accountability mechanisms on the back end do not solve the problem. then we continue to see over and over again this has not just been a problem in chicago but a problem around the country that when reports like this come out, when issues ise, that ware not able to
