Cybersecurity Agencies Warn of Accellion Vulnerability Exploits

The security agencies recommend updating to Accellion FTA version FTA 9 12 432 or later as the best way to mitigate the risks. If this is not possible, organizations should isolate or block internet access to and from systems hosting the software, check systems for malicious activity and consider moving to a new file-sharing platform.
Accellion says FTA will reach end of life on April 30, 2021, when the company will no longer support it. Accellion is recommending its customers migrate to its newer product, Kiteworks, which it says is more secure.
Good for Accellion for urging its customers to migrate away from the vulnerable FTA web server that appears to have resulted in 100 companies being attacked and data stolen from 25 of them thus far. Accellion s transparency is commendable, says Sam Curry, chief security officer at Cybereason. ....

Kroger warns customers of pharmacy data breach using Accellion service

The breach did not impact grocery data, but could have involved personal health and insurance information used at the pharmacy.
Kroger said there was unauthorized access to a software they use called Accellion.
Accellion is a vendor that provides secure third-party data file transfer services to over 3,000 customers around the world, according to Kroger.
After being informed of the incident s effect on January 23, 2021, Kroger discontinued the use of Accellion s services, reported the incident to federal law enforcement, and initiated its own forensic investigation to review the potential scope and impact of the incident, Kroger said.
Grocery pharmacies in other chains like Ralph s, Harris Teeter, and Fred Meyer stores may also have been involved in the breach. ....

NZ Reserve Bank Issues Update on Accellion Breach

We have completed our assessment of the files illegally downloaded during the breach and are notifying the organizations whose files contained sensitive information to support them and assist in managing the impact on their customers and staff, says Adrian Orr, the reserve bank s governor.
The Reserve Bank s investigation found that files removed from the bank s systems exposed data that included personal email addresses, dates of birth and credit information, Orr says.
The bank has brought in KPMG to conduct an additional independent review of its systems and processes. Our core functions remain unaffected, sound and operational, Orr notes.

Washington state is hit by one of the nastiest data breaches on its systems for the year, as a record high of 1.6 million unemployed residents of the area has their identity exposed to security threats and hackers. The attack was said to be centered on the third-party service provider of Washington and is not pointed towards the Employment Security Department (ESD).
