The transitional autonomous government in the southern Philippines needs more time to control militants linked to the Islamic State (IS) but has begun talks with them, its leaders told lawmakers on Friday. 
Ahod Balawag Ebrahim, chief minister of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), told senators during a legislative inquiry that he had asked for a three-year extension for his government because normalization in the restive south would take longer than the three years granted to the interim administration.
“The normalization is not a failure. The problem is really that it is not completed. That is why we are asking for an extension, in order to complete the transition and the normalization said the leader of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), which used to be a separatist group before it signed a peace deal with the government in 2014.  ....

Dozens of Filipino Muslim militants linked to the Islamic State attacked a southern Philippine town and engaged the military in a gunbattle Saturday until government troops drove them away, the military said.
The militants with the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) group entered the town of Datu Paglas in Maguindanao province at dawn and took over the main public market, said Lt. Col. John Paul Baldomar, the local military spokesman.
“Panicked civilians ran for safety and reported to the authorities and our military forces near the area were dispatched,” Baldomar told BenarNews. “We immediately sent forces there to evacuate the civilians.” ....

The Muslim holy month of Ramadan began on a violent note in the southern Philippines where authorities mounted a deadly raid on a suspected pro-Islamic State bomber’s hideout and a family of three was killed in an ambush, officials said Wednesday.
Police were dispatched to Datu Salibo town in Maguindanao province to arrest Abu Naim, a member of the IS-linked Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) who was implicated in a series of bombings in the region, but officers met with resistance early Wednesday, authorities said.
Naim and his companions provoked a gun battle when they opened fire at the arresting officers, said Maj. Esmael Madin, chief of operations for the Philippine National Police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group. ....
