WHO supports Benue State to curb a cholera outbreak among vulnerable populations

Makurdi, 7 May, 2021 - “I was not only scared about my health; I was also scared for the well-being of three of my children admitted same time as I at the hospital”, says Hajiya Zainab Yusuf, a mother of four from Benue State.
Mrs Yusuf and her family were some of the people diagnosed with Cholera from Abinsi community and treated at the Primary Health Care Centre Abinsi, in Guma LGA.
“I was diagnosed with cholera alongside three of my children. I was so worried about our health. I was not able to take care of them because we were all on admission same time. Unfortunately, I lost one of my children to the disease. Although I am still sad about losing my child, I am grateful to Allah for the help we got from the state government and World Health Organization (WHO). If not for their timely intervention, we would all have died,” she said. ....

Insecurity in Nigeria has continued to remain a daunting challenge, with attacks by kidnappers gradually shifting to urban areas.
Almost on daily basis, the media space is awash with news of  killings of defenceless Nigerians , without any moral justification, with the value for life  deteriorating to its lowest ebb.
Investigation by  Saturday Vanguard  revealed that there are different categories of kidnappers.  One  of the categories are members  of  the Boko Haram sect,  who are  responsible for some abductions  in the northern part of the country. ....

How lack of potable water triggered cholera deaths in Benue communities

Two communities in two council areas of Benue State; Obagaji and Abinsi in the Agatu and Guma Local Government Areas respectively recorded cholera cases. About 26 people have died and 100 treated.
The state Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Joseph Ngbea, said 14 deaths were recorded in Agatu while 12 died in Guma.
Our correspondent who visited the affected community in the Guma Local Government Area of the state learnt that in Abinsi the disease was caused by the source of water the residents use for domestic purposes.
It was gathered that River Benue is the only water source for the people of Kabawa community at Abinsi. ....
