UK challenge trial will infect volunteers with Covid-19 to test vaccines

A group of daring volunteers will soon become infected with Covid-19 on purpose.
They’re young. They’re healthy. And they want scientists to give them a candidate vaccine and then deliberately expose them to the coronavirus, so we can all find out faster whether the vaccine is effective.
This is called a human challenge trial, and it’s set to kick off in the UK within a month, now that an ethics board has given it the necessary approval. Scientists have run such trials in the past for influenza, malaria, typhoid, dengue, and cholera, but this will be the world’s first for Covid-19. ....

A few weeks ago, Quynh Tran, her husband, and their two daughters, 11 and 14, skated under a Castro Valley, California, highway overpass after dark. They watched their shadows grow up the sides of the concrete walls and pretended the shapes were monsters eating each other. “It s really neat having that experience when no one s around,” Tran says. “And it s a different feeling when you do it in the dark.”
Since the pandemic started, Tran’s family has been avoiding the busy hiking trails near their house. Instead, they venture out at night, when fewer people are around. “Even though the pandemic limited our normal activities, we were still committed to keeping our kids active and being outdoors … even if in the dark,” she says. ....
