Nigerians' Shops Remain Shut In Ghana, Five Months After Bilateral Talks – Gistmaster


Five months after a series of bilateral talks between the Nigerian government and authorities in Ghana aimed at addressing the nearly a decade-long controversy that led to the closure of Nigerian traders’ shops in Ghana, the issues have not been resolved.
Dozens of shops belonging to Nigerians are still under lock and key; while most of the owners are stranded. Some of them said they beg to feed even as many of them remain reluctant to come back home despite a window created by the federal government to facilitate their safe return.
The centre of the lingering controversy was a $1 million levy imposed on Nigerian traders and other foreign investors to pay Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), before the shops would be opened. ....

5 months after bilateral talks: Nigerians' shops remain shut in Ghana


The centre of the lingering controversy was a $1 million levy imposed on Nigerian traders and other foreign investors to pay Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), before the shops would be opened.
The conditions set by the Ghanaian authorities had triggered a debate in Nigeria and within the African sub-region, which many considered as a breach of ECOWAS’ trade protocols.
After receiving a formal complaint from its citizens, the Nigerian government set up a ministerial committee to find a lasting solution to the plight of the traders but it appeared not much has been achieved.
The committee was made up of representatives of the ministries of Interior, Trade and Investment, Foreign Affairs and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM). ....

418 Nigerians return from Saudi Arabia, figure hits 1,071 in three days

A fresh batch of 418 Nigerians returned from Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, bringing the total number of returnees to 1,071 within three days.
Leading the inter-governmental agencies to receive the returnees, the Director, Consular and Legal Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bolaji Akinremi, said 255 and 398 returnees arrived Nigeria on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

Abuja, Feb. 3, 2021 (NAN) The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) says 420 Nigerian returnees arrived Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, from Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.
This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Abdul-Rahman Balogun, Head, Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit of NiDCOM.
Balogun said on Wednesday that 27 of the 420 returnees were children while 393 were adults.
He stated that the returnees were received by senior government officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, NCDC and other relevant agencies.
Speaking at the airport, Amb. Akinremi Bolaji, Director Consular and Legal Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, urged the returnees to cooperate with the government. ....
