France denies request to use Algerian airspace, ECOWAS continues moves on Niger

The French military denied on Tuesday that it had asked Algeria to use its airspace to carry out a military operation in Niger. The head of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) mission to Niger described the meeting with the military council as "productive" The Peace and Security Council of the African Union announced the immediate suspension of Niger's membership in all activities of the Union. France's military presence in West Africa has become increasingly fragile amid a wave of coups in the Sahel since 2020.

Niger's coup leaders rallied tens of thousands of supporters at a stadium in Niger on Sunday. The show of force comes ahead of a deadline set by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for the military to bring President Mohamed Bazoum back to power by Sunday evening. Young people formed "vigilante security committees" in anticipation of possible military intervention by ECOWAS. Italy's government said on Sunday it had reduced the number of troops in Niger to make room at its military base for civilians who may need protection.
