solution by many people in israel, including many prominent members of prime minister netanyahu s cabinet. they are determined and they say publicly there will never be a palestinian state on the west bank. also palestinian society is divided between the palestinian authority, which accepts israel s existence, which opposes violence against israel and which provides a great service to israel in suppressing terror aive theties within the west bank but there is internal disagreement with hazard, which controls gaza, which does not agree with the palestinian authority on those decisions with respect to israel. so both societies are divided. both societies have internal political issues as well as the dynamic between the two societies themselves. a lot of this touched on in the book you wrote a path to peace. george mitchell, thank you for coming on the show, we appreciate it. thank you for having me. let me bring in aaron david miller, vice president for new initiatives and distin
differences of opinion. much more sharply than have obama and netanyahu. hasn t altered the basic relationship between the two countries, which is very strong. eisenhower and ben-gurion didn t get along. eisenhower wouldn t even talk to ben-gurion at the time of the crisis. so it s a factor, but i don t think it s a driving factor on either side. i think each is upheld by what he believes to be the right way to achieve a successful outcome in the region. they just disagree on how to do that. senator mitchell nice to have you on the program. again congrats on the book a path to peace. i think everyone is hoping for peace. here s a question that s been swirling around from the current president and the president-elect. what would have happened if president-elect donald trump ran against president obama? question sparking a feud between both men after obama s comments in a podcast interview our david axelrod joins us next to talk about his interview. it was his interview with the
former minority leader who served as the envoy for middle east peace with a new book called a path to peace, a brief history of israeli palestinian negotiations and a way forward in the middle east. thank you very much for being with us today. plenty to discuss. that s for sure. israel strongly believes the u.s. was behind the security council resolution. as you know, administration officials denied they have anything to do with it, had anything to do with drafting it. they say they weren t involved at all. how do you see it impacting the relationship between the u.s. and israel moving forward, particularly given that president obama only has a few weeks left in office. sp there is a long history as we documented of hostile relations between the prime minister of israel and presidents of the united states. this is not new. president eisenhower and prime minister bengurian were at odds. president reagan and prime
mitchell, the former senate majority leader who served as the u.s. special envoy for middle east peace. he has a new book called a path to peace a briefly history of israeli/palestinian negotiations and a way forward in the middle east. senator, great to see you. thank you for joining us. thank you, andrea, for having me. as you know, the egyptians on the security council sponsored a resolution that was to be voted on this afternoon then overnight netanyahu went into overdrive on the diplomacy side and my understanding is that they pressured president sisi to pull that back, but it was about to create a real confrontation diplomatical. donald trump came out and tweeted in favor of vetoing the resolution. netanyahu demanded that the u.s. veto the resolution. is this a resolution as it is now written that should be vetoed by the white house, by the state department? i ve not had an opportunity to read the resolution yet.
w. bush said before he left office. israel has a state. the people don t live in fear and anxiety. they want society. palestinians don t have a state. they re not going to get a state until the people of israel have reasonable and sustainable security. they re not going to get that until palestinians get a demilitarized, sovereign state. each should be vested not only in their own goal but in the other achieving its goal. this is one of those books, a path to peace that if you care about the issue it s worth the time to read. you ve done it in succinct fashion. george mitchell, thank you for your service to the country. thank you for being on new day. pleasure to be here. what is president-elect trump trying to accomplish with his inflammatory tweets? we get the bottom line next. i have asthma.
