look, what happened on 9/11, 9/12, we were all americans. we were all united as one. and that s the difference between then and now. right now, we have too many forces trying to accentuate the differences among us. instead of saying, hey, these are some of the shared values that we have as americans, and there s more that unites us than pulls us apart. but unfortunately we have way too many people and too many entities that really want to accentuate the negatives, not so much the negatives but just the differences, instead of what unites us as a nation. this nation always comes together in times like 9/11, just like the day after pearl harbor. 80% of people did not want to enter world war ii on december
first question, when you think of where we are as a nation today, reflect on the lessons learned from september 11, 2001, and how have they made us safer? well, first, thank you for having me on, alex. good to see you again. my prayers and thoughts go to all of the families, the rescue workers, our military, the 2,977 people that died on this day 20 years ago and the people who got sick afterwards trying to rescue them. we have an obligation to take care of these people. i would say, alex, three main lessons learned that i would mention now. there are more. one is we were in the jaws of hell on 9/11. on 9/12 we came together as a nation, as people flying a flag, donating blood, hugging people we didn t know, helping them out on the street. we can disagree in our politics on certain issues and we will
tragically we don t still share today. i think that s one of the sad things about the past decade is that sense of common purpose, that love of our freedom that united us as americans, not just on september 11th, but for days and weeks after that. kind of vanished. on 9/12, we had a feeling throughout the whole country of patriotism. we were all looking out for each other, black, white, latino, whatever. there was at the moment of the attacks and days afterward a joining of hearts and minds and will in america to get through this together. somehow that s begun to fray. i think that s sad. i don t think it s a worthy tribute to the people who died and ought not to be our legacy. we have to find a way to rekind that flame in some respect. i no longer dwell on the 9/11
