This just in to cnn, the cdc says u.s. life expectancy has dropped to its lowest level in 25 years. even with all the medical advances we ve made, why? cnn senior medical correspondent elizabeth cohen joins us now. elizabeth, break down this new report for us. reporter: ana, this report is really such sobering news, and i think everyone will understand the reasons why. so life expectancy which usually, you know, in recent decades just goes up, up, up with medical advances, with better prevention and diagnostics instead is going down, in other words, the life expectancy is lower than it had been the year before. so let s take a look at this report that just came out from the cdc. it looks at life expectancy last year in 2021. so they found that it was 76.4 ....

More better diagnostics and prevention, but unfortunately now we ve seen it go down for the second year in a row. so let s take a look at what the cdc found in this report. they found that the life expectancy in 2021 was 76.4. that s a seven-month decrease from the year before, and this is really a gut punch. the biggest drop the biggest drop in life expectancy was for people between the ages of 35 and 44. so very young people. the two drivers as you mentioned were covid and drug overdoses. so nearly 1 in 8 u.s. deaths in 2021 was due to covid-19, and nearly 107,000 deaths were from drug overdoses. now victor, i hope that when we re sitting here a year from now when they do the 2022 report that we will hopefully be able to say the life expectancy went back up again, but we will have to see. victor? yeah. hope so. e- elizabeth cohen, thank you. first there were questions ....
It s been since 1996, partially i m sure because of the pandemic but what s going on? it doesn t sound great and over the last two years it has dropped. it was 77 years old in 2020 now talking about 76.4 years old. large contributors to this are covid and drug overdose deaths. we know that covid is the third leading cause of death after heart disease, point that out as number one, cancer number two. it caused one in eight deaths last year in 2021. add to that drug overdoses that was responsible for a little over 100,000 deaths in 20 21. that number increased five fold, it s accounting for a third of accidental deaths. so largest population for the drug overdose, 35 to 44-year-olds. so young. very young. thanks, doctor, appreciate it. thank you. new fallout this morning ....
