0:57 KLCC s Aubrey Bulkeley reports on the grand opening of a new ice cream shop at the 5th Street Market Expansion in Eugene. Owner Tim Joyce is originally from Youngstown, Ohio where Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream was founded 75 years ago. So when Joyce decided to start a business after his time with Nike, he was very familiar with the product. “I decided to get into the ice cream business late in life,” said Joyce. “I meet many of my customers that say their first job was in the ice cream business. My last job’s in the ice cream business.” ....
Brian Bull / KLCC Eugene’s skyline has a flashy new feature as of tonight. At 6:00pm, a few dozen people gathered near the new Gordon Hotel as its large rooftop sign was ceremoniously turned on. Casey Obie Barrett lead the countdown… “3…2…1… Gooorrrdooon!” (CHEERS, APPLAUSE) Well there it is, that sign will not turn off, ever again, he grinned. If it does, call the City of Eugene, because we’re on a redundant grid (LAUGHTER).it’s guaranteed.” Barrett is executive vice president of Obie Companies. The Gordon Hotel is named for his grandfather, and is part of the $75 million Fifth Street expansion. ....
1:03 KLCC s Brian Bull reports on how the 5th Street expansion project has been faring in spite of some of 2020 s hurdles, including the pandemic and the wildfires. He says about a fourth of the Gordon Loft units are already leased, with the Gordon Hotel opening its guest rooms ahead of the Valentines Day weekend. We were originally opening around Black Friday, that time after Thanksgiving headed into the holiday. And some of the impacts…definitely coronavirus related. ....
