This is the ninth time in their last 10 first-round picks they’ve addressed that side of the ball, with the lone offensive player being quarterback Jordan Love last year. Brian Gutekunst took a cornerback, Jaire Alexander, with his first pick as GM in 2018. Also, the last two times the Packers changed defensive coordinators, they gave him a first-round player or players. In 2009, Dom Capers got two first-rounders B.J. Raji and Clay Matthews. Mike Pettine got Alexander in 2018 and now Joe Barry gets Stokes. The pick says Pettine wasn’t the only problem with the Packers’ defense last year. ....
METAIRIE, La. Identifying the New Orleans Saints top need heading into this year’s NFL draft is easy. Sean Payton singled out cornerback last week as a position the Saints must address between now and the start of the season. But finding the right fit with the 28th pick on Thursday night could prove a little more difficult. Of course the Saints could make an aggressive trade up the board which they have done a whopping 20 times in the past 14 drafts. But their eight picks this year are more precious than usual after Drew Brees’ retirement left them with a big question mark at QB and a salary-cap purge left them with holes at cornerback, linebacker, wide receiver, defensive line and tight end. ....
