KUNR Today: Extreme Fire Season Expected In Mountain West, Some Progressive Bills Die In Legislature

Extreme Fire Season Expected Across Mountain West
By Madelyn Beck,
All signs are pointing to an extreme fire season across the region this year. The Mountain West is facing a number of water shortages, according to Boise State University professor Moji Sadegh.
“We are down on river flows, we are down on dam storage, we are down on soil moisture. It’s hotter. Everything is converging,” Sadegh said.
Unfortunately, he says the hotter it is, the dryer it gets, and things can deteriorate quickly. In the last few weeks, our region has been drying up rapidly. Now, a whopping 84% of the West is in a drought. ....

#NVLeg Week 15: The End Is Nigh

Listen to the interview here.
Noah Glick: All right, so let s get back into Carson City here. What s been going on at the Legislature?
Paul Boger: It has been a busy couple of weeks, and let s just go ahead and talk about yesterday because apparently all the things had to happen yesterday.
First off, the death penalty ban that we talked about before, that is officially dead. . That s because Governor Sisolak essentially put the kibosh on it yesterday. It appears that negotiations were going nowhere, and that s because you had progressives who wanted to abolish the death penalty in total [and] you had prosecutors who wanted to keep it intact. So apparently, negotiations were going nowhere, and the bill is dead. That s kind of one of the bigger news items. ....

Nevada Lawmakers Advance Ed Funding Plan Over Teacher Concerns

Listen to the story here.
The Senate Finance Committee approved SB439 late yesterday evening, just a day after lawmakers introduced the measure. It would officially implement the state’s new pupil-centered funding plan. It’s a mechanism lawmakers created in 2019 to shift K-12 funding from a traditional program and enrollment-based model toward one more focused on individual student needs.
Superintendent of Public Instruction Jhone Ebert hailed the plan as the future of K-12 in Nevada.
“This work is difficult, but it couldn t it be more important than at this moment where we are currently redesigning the future of education,” she said while presenting the measure to lawmakers. ....

#NVLeg: Lawmakers Looking To Help Small Biz Says Benitez-Thompson

Listen to the interview here.
PAUL BOGER: The speaker and the governor talked about lawmakers really focusing on pandemic relief and trying to help Nevadans through this pandemic. Where is the legislature on those bills, on that pandemic relief, and what more is going to come out of the session, do you think?
TERESA BENITEZ-THOMPSON: The conversation we re going to be having is about the Governor s Office of Economic Development and abatements, because we know that we have different areas of the state that are struggling with record numbers of unemployment, and then different areas of the state that are not. So we really need to focus on and target our communities who are going to take the longest to recover. So we see that conversation as being very important to how Nevada recovers. ....
