Microsoft Weekly: An unfortunate Exchange, Ignite in the spring, and Windows generations

Mar 7, 2021 10:52 EST with 0 comments The week brought everything from Ignite news aplenty – as expected – to a rather serious set of Exchange on-prem vulnerabilities, and the usual Windows Insider builds. You can find info about that, as well as much more below, in your Microsoft digest for the week of February 28 – March 6. An unfortunate Exchange CVE-2021-26855, CVE-2021-26857, CVE-2021-26858, and CVE-2021-27065, otherwise known as the set of vulnerabilities in Exchange on-premises servers that were used by state-sponsored Chinese hacking group HAFNIUM in its attacks this week (and the days prior). While news of the exploits started circulating at the beginning of the year, the vulnerability chaining did not happen until earlier this week. Microsoft has outlined a number of Indicators of Compromise (or IOCs), along with pushing out out-of-band patches for all affected Exchange on-prem servers - versions 2013 through to 2019. Panos Panay is pumped for the next generation of Windows

Panos Panay is pumped for the next generation of Windows Mar 2, 2021 18:16 EST · Hot! with 51 comments Today was the first day of Microsoft s spring 2021 Ignite conference, and in a brief, 14-minute fireside chat, Chief Product Officer Panos Panay and CVP and Product Manager Roanne Sones sat down to talk about Windows for a bit. Unfortunately, there s not much that they actually talked about. Panay did tease the next generation of Windows and say that he s pumped about it, but he also said that that s not for this event. In fact, one thing that was left unsaid is that Microsoft is actually planning a Windows-focused event. Here s what was said (thanks to transcription by Windows Central):

Microsoft unveils 1,000-person webinars and other Teams features for education

Mar 2, 2021 10:48 EST with 3 comments Microsoft s spring Ignite event is set to begin today, and a bunch of major announcements are already out there. Along with them, Microsoft has revealed the February updates to Teams for education users. Many of the features announced here were also mentioned in the announcements from Ignite, including the new dynamic view, presenter mode, Microsoft Teams Connect, and more. Other features weren t mentioned there, though, like support for webinars with up to 1,000 people. Webinars are more interactive than video broadcasts, and attendees can use video, voice, or chat, as long as the host allows it. If the webinar grows too big, it will automatically transform into a video-only broadcast, which can support up to 10,000 people normally, but through the end of 2021, it will actually allow up to 20,000 attendees. Both of these features will be available this month.

Ignite 2021: Data loss prevention, compliance solution previews, and new certifications

Mar 2, 2021 09:00 EST with 0 comments During its ongoing Ignite 2021 event, Microsoft has taken the wraps off a number of announcements, ranging from security to identity solutions which are either in preview or generally available. The Redmond giant also took the time to highlight some compliance enhancements and brand-new certifications it has made available. Starting with compliance, data loss prevention (DLP) is now supported for Chrome browsers and on-prem server-based environments such as file shares or SharePoint Server 2010, 2013, or 2016. Allowing for the extension of DLP policies across environments to identify and prevent accidental sharing of sensitive data, the capability is now in preview.
