the closest estimation to sales figures. 0ur north american business correspondent reports. byd calls itself the biggest car brand you have never heard of. but that may be about to change. the chinese automaker sold more battery powered electric vehicles in the last three months of the year than tesla did. that is a first. the american company is facing headwinds, higher borrowing costs in the us led to slowing demand but its lesser known chinese rival is enjoying tail winds including a massive domestic market, cheap labour, and strong government support. and unlike tesla, byd makes its own batteries. so controlling that part of the supply chain gives byd more flexibility to cut prices which it did in the last part of the year, sending sales spiking. as my colleague has just reported, tesla s latest number puts byd ahead of the curve. the chinese ev maker reported around 3 million in sales last year but that number comprises both electric cars and hybrid vehicles. even ....

in turkey, voting has closed in one of the most elections the country has seen. the country is deciding whether president erdohan remains in power after 20 years. it is expected to be a close race between him and an opposition leader kemal k l cdaroglu. he is a former civil servant who heads an alliance of six opposition parties, both secular and islamist. he promised to scrap many of the powers acquired by mr erdogan and return turkey to a parliamentary system. and also called for better relations with the west, including renewal of turkey s bid for membership of the eu. the current leader recep tayyip erdogan first came to power as prime minister in 2003 and became president in 2014. under him, turkey enjoyed strong economic growth, but it s been hit by high inflation, and the recent earthquakes in which tens of thousands died. he s also become increasingly authoritarian with more powers in the hands of the president and tighter restrictions on free speech. with most ....

intercepted. and british prime minister rishi sunak says he s disappointed at the european broadcasting union s zelenskyy from making an address at the eurovision song contest. we start with the breaking news in the last couple of hours. a convicted child abuser has been found guilty of brutally murdering a seven year old girl in the north east of england more than 30 years after the killing took place. nikki allan was repeatedly hit about the head and stabbed dozens of times in sunderland in october 1992. prosecutors told newcastle crown court she was then dumped like rubbish in a derelict building near her home. david boyd, 55, from stockton on tees, was convicted after a three week trial. he will be sentenced on 23 may. our news correspondent, danny savage was at newcastle crown court and explains why this prosecution has taken so long. it was a complex and challenging case for northumbria police but they spent many years going off down the wrong avenue thinking ....
