Number of addicts soars in lockdown
The number of problem gamblers treated at specialist clinics has risen by almost a fifth during the pandemic.
Some 371 patients were referred to the National Problem Gambling Clinic between June 2020 and May 2021 – up from 316 the previous year. Five had amassed debts of at least £100,000 while 44 owed between £20,000 and £99,999.
Its founder Henrietta Bowden-Jones said people vulnerable to gambling have been impacted negatively by lockdown , blaming factors such as boredom and financial anxiety.
Matt Gaskell, who runs the NHS Northern Gambling Service, said they have also seen a spike in referrals, adding that coronavirus has created a perfect storm .

Gambling with Lives sets out new care and treatment pathway
25th May 2021
| By Robert Fletcher
British charity Gambling with Lives has proposed a new treatment pathway for those experiencing gambling-related harm.
The scheme would bring together people harmed by gambling and health experts, with the aim of providing a treatment and support system for people with gambling disorders and families affected by gambling.
Gambling with Lives said the service would work in collaboration with the National Health Service (NHS) in Great Britain and complement existing treatment and support systems.
The charity has applied for regulatory settlement funding from the Gambling Commission to support the project, with the idea of running a pilot of the scheme with partners in Greater Manchester
Webinar Review: The Genetics of Addiction

I feel like the majority of my understanding and outlook on addiction has been influenced more by Danny Boyle s film Trainspotting than by any scientific research or news story. Of course, Trainspotting is not as much about addiction or heroin as it is about reliance and personal growth, yet it has become a cultural calling card of addiction and our societal perceptions of it.
One line which highlights this is the protagonist detailing that, to aid in weaning off heroin, he requires one bottle of Valium, which I have already procured from my mother who is, in her own domestic and socially acceptable way, also a drug addict . From my perspective, this fairly innocuous line details much of the stigmatisation, double standards, skewed priorities, and misunderstandings at the centre of society s fight against the somewhat abstractly described concept of addiction .
