Weathering storms: Cal Athletics’ year with COVID-19

On Nov. 15, the Bears kicked off their abbreviated 2020 season and college sports returned to Cal for the first time in almost nine months. Since then, Cal Athletics has been awash in a wave of returning collegiate sports.
A return of sports during the pandemic, however, requires a litany of tasks that are not obvious to the casual observer. To follow health protocols and safely put on events, Cal Athletics staff have had to shift to new roles during the pandemic, construct plans for every eventuality and adapt previous jobs and activities to safer, outdoor settings.

Facing reality: Cal misses mark in second loss to Oregon

Tasked with upsetting an Oregon squad that sits in third in the Pac-12, Cal already had its hands full on Saturday afternoon. Add in the fact that the Ducks were motivated and looking to make a late push for the top spot in the conference with three games left to play, and the blue and gold playing spoiler seemed improbable, if not impossible. So when the final Haas Pavilion buzzer sounded on both a 74-63 Oregon win and Cal’s regular season, it appeared that the Bears were ready for hibernation.
