The borders of India’s national capital are buzzing with increased police forces to prepare for a crackdown against farmers protesting three new farm laws introduced by the Narendra Modi government.
The heightened security comes days after a farmers’ rally in Delhi resulted in violence, including a group of protestors storming the historic Red Fort on Jan. 26.
But while the images of violence during the Delhi rally including those of a
khalsa flag hoisted on Red Fort flood social media, they must not overshadow scenes of peaceful protests by farmers who have battled a fierce winter along the borders of the capital city for over two months now.

Singh, taking a break from his job in the IT sector in Sydney, Australia, has been running a Twitter campaign promoting the struggles of farmers in India. His family-owned 1968 model DT-14 tractor, manufactured in Russia, was one of the oldest tractors that strode up the roads elegantly during the farmers parade against the farm laws.

All roads led to Delhi for a long march of tractor trolleys moving bumper to bumper from various directions in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan on Sunday, lending momentum to the planned Republic Day farmers’ rally in the national capital in more ways than one. On stretches of the NH-44 between Haryana’s Ambala and Sonipat, there were tractors as far as the eye could travel.
Songs of protest sung by popular Punjab singers blared from speakers as flags of farmers’ unions fluttered atop tractors headed for the Singhu-Kundli and Tikri borders. Unlike November 26 and 27, when Haryana police had put up barricades at various locations to stop the surge of farmers proceeding towards Delhi. On Sunday, the police’s role was restricted to regulating traffic at bottlenecks created by convoys of tractors.
