Tanglewood s 2021 season looks almost normal - The Boston Globe

Tanglewood’s 2021 season looks almost normal By A.Z. Madonna Globe Staff,Updated April 8, 2021, 2 hours ago Email to a Friend The six-week lineup announced Thursday features all the usual suspects. Clockwise from bottom left: Andris Nelsons, John Williams, Yo-Yo Ma, Keith Lockhart, and Emanuel Ax. Last summer, Tanglewood opened its gates to the public just three days a week, with the scene behind its tall walls remaining eerie and silent. No strains of melodies floated across the grassy lawns by day. The Koussevitzky Music Shed sat empty and dark by night, panels displaying names from the region’s high school class of 2020 who never got to toss their caps into the air. Even now, it feels almost dangerous to hope for anything more.

When Beethoven resonates in a crisis - The Boston Globe

When Beethoven resonates in a crisis By A.Z. Madonna Globe Staff,Updated February 25, 2021, 4:22 p.m. Email to a Friend Andris Nelsons leads a series of Beethoven-themed BSO Now concerts, which were released online in February.Aram Boghosian In my first memory of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, “Pastorale,” I am very young and small and wrapped in blankets in the guest room of my grandparents’ North Jersey ranch house. My Grandma Alene and Grandpa Harold have disconnected the enormous grandfather clock in the living room; they know I’m scared of the ominous bong. The golden final movement wafts through the cracked door and carries me off to sleep.

Tai Murray on expanding the classical repertoire

Celebrating the music of today is hugely important, and making heard contemporary composers of every visual colour and every invisible one, on every concert programme, I consider a responsibility towards the future. Six years ago, Chi-chi Nwanoku founded Chineke!, Europe’s first majority Black, Asian, and ethnically diverse orchestra, with whom I have performed, and recorded Errollyn Wallen’s Concerto Grosso. Making music with others is all to do with treating them as individuals, and whether you can relate on a musical and human level. Our colour of skin is not the conversation, but when it is - racism is not my burden. 2020 changed the world, and while classical music continues to exceed expectations in a digital world, this is an apt opportunity to rethink and reboot and continue the progress.
