Sheet music as tool of colonialism

The internet was astir regarding an article in The Telegraph. The headline reads, “Musical notation branded colonialist by Oxford professors hoping to decolonise the curriculum.” Musical pundits picked up on this as “the woke” trying to destroy Western Culture from within. A few Google session later, I found an article from the Associated Press that reads: Claim: The U.K.’s University of Oxford is considering removing sheet music from its music curriculum as part of sweeping changes intended to “decolonize” the program. AP’s assessment: False. There are no plans under consideration to remove sheet music or western musical notation from the music curriculum at Oxford University. The music faculty are planning to add new offerings to the curriculum to be announced in the coming months, a representative from the university said.

KXLY April 2, 2021 4:30 PM By The Associated Press Posted: Updated: Matt Slocum FILE - In this Thursday, Dec. 10, 2020 file photo, a registered nurse swabs a patient during testing for COVID-19 in Mifflin Square Park in south Philadelphia. On Friday, April 2, 2021, The Associated Press reported on stories circulating online incorrectly asserting COVID-19 tests cause cancer because they are sterilized with ethylene oxide. Ethylene oxide is a gas commonly used to sterilize medical equipment. It is also used in the sterilization of spices and cosmetics. While it is listed by federal agencies as a carcinogen with long-term exposure, experts say the gas is used only in small amounts to sterilize COVID testing kits and would not present cancer hazard.
