SHS art students earn recognition in national contest E-T staff report Stephenville High School art students recently found out the results from their first virtual art competition of the year, according to SHS art teacher Liz Stearnes. Vivian Vu and Morgan Wells both received national recognition in the Scholastic Art and Writing competition. This year, there were more than 320,000 entries in 30 categories including everything from painting and mixed media to jewelry and poetry. According to its website, the Scholastic Art and Writing Competition is the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards were founded in 1923 and, for nearly a century, have inspired bold ideas in creative teens throughout the country. ....

Taking to the skies is a dream achieved by some local students, and Elexis Martin is an example. Since 2016, Steubenville City Schools has offered courses in aerospace engineering and aviation through Ohio Career and Technical Education. Harding Middle School students started participating in these courses through an after-school program while some Steubenville High School students took daily aviation coursework to meet the CTE aviation training requirements. The high school offers several other Ohio CTE programs to its students. ....

Feb 5, 2021 STEUBENVILLE Quinn Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church, 515 North St., Steubenville, is observing Black History Month every Sunday in February. “Our theme for Black History Month will be ‘Gearing Up to Move Forward, ” explained Terry L. Jennings, committee member. “On the first and second Sunday, (Feb. 7 and Feb. 14) we will celebrate our spiritual heritage by remembering Richard Allen, the founder and first elected and consecrated bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church,” she noted. Speakers will be local businessman Jonathan Littlejohn, Little Snack Shack; Jacqueline Gibson of Quinn; Karla Martin, senior vice president of Diversity, Aspire and Workforce of Eastern Gateway Community College; and Brenda Ware, owner and operator of Miss Brenda’s Restaurant in the Trinity Medical Pavilion. ....

Traditionally, the Lee Alexander West Spiritual Movement recognizes educators, first responders and community activists for their efforts to help those around them. Like everything else, West said they had to rethink it with the pandemic in mind so this year, instead of a centralized service, awards are being presented individually, on days and times of the recipient’s choosing. ....
