Petersburg assembly advances bond measure for electrical generation

Petersburg’s borough assembly Monday approved the first reading of a ballot question on bonding for Petersburg’s electrical system. The measure would be one of two to appear on the October 5
th ballot and could shore up both hydro and diesel power generation for electrical customers on the island.
The 7.8 million dollar bond would pay for an overhaul and upgrades at the borough’s hydroelectric power plant at Blind Slough, on southern Mitkof Island. Overall that’s expected to cost around nine million dollars. Utility director Karl Hagerman explained the work will keep the power plant running as Petersburg’s cheapest source of electricity.
Petersburg to sell some land by sealed bid

The Petersburg borough will sell three parcels of land next month. The borough assembly Tuesday agreed to sell the land by sealed bid, instead of by live auction.
The borough had been planning on a live, outcry auction for all three parcels in August. Of the three parcels, the one at 306 Sandy Beach Road is zoned for residential use, is under half an acre and has electricity, water and sewer available nearby.
Neighboring property owner John Fortna asked the assembly to consider a sealed bid instead.

COVID show notes for Friday, May 14, 2021 –
Incident commander Karl Hagerman – COVID situation in Petersburg right now, still at low risk, four active cases, all travel related, people who have left Petersburg, returned here and since tested positive. They were symptomatic and were tested at the airport and at Petersburg Medical Center’s respiratory clinic. They have been directed to isolate and he believes the risk to festival-goers is low.
Petersburg still has a face covering mandate in place. He mentioned the Centers for Disease Control’s latest guidance on fully vaccinated people and masking.
