HUNTINGTON â Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has gotten criticism from within his own party for his aggressive anti-coronavirus measures, but the stateâs Democratic senator had praise for him Friday.
âI think the governor has had a steady hand in this,â Sen. Sherrod Brown said while visiting the Cincinnati Health Department to promote getting vaccinated against COVID-19.
âI wish I could say the same about the Legislature and the way the Legislature has politicized this,â Brown added of GOP-led state legislators. Some have challenged DeWineâs actions with criticism such as trying to turn business operators into âmask police.â
Brown unseated DeWine in the 2006 Senate election.

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) toured the Cincinnati Health Department Friday. Nurses who ve been giving COVID-19 vaccinations talked about how the rollout is going and public reception. Brown says medical professionals tell him people reluctant to get the shot need to hear positive stories from people they know. It s really not enough for people to hear from me or even from Dr. Fauci. People need to hear from reluctant friends or neighbors or relatives that got the vaccine and tell them about how safe it is and how it matters, he says. That s all about sharing stories.
He acknowledges people in rural communities are less likely to be vaccinated or say they re willing to get the shot.

CINCINNATI â Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is visiting a mobile COVID-19 vaccine site at the Price Hill Branch Library Friday afternoon.
The Cincinnati Health Department hosts the clinic Friday as part of the Get Out the Vax initiative. Local health leaders hope to get 80% of people living in Hamilton County vaccinated by July 4.
So far, more than 4.8 million Ohioans have received at least a first dose of vaccine, or about 41% of the state s population. About 4 million Ohioans, or 35%, are fully vaccinated against coronavirus.
