Delivering COVID-19 vaccine to B C First Nations by goal still possible: officials

McDonald says provincial officials have not reported any cases of faster-spreading variants of the virus in First Nations communities, though she could not confirm how many COVID-positive samples were being analyzed. Katie Hughes, the health authority s vice-president focused on public health, says just shy of 16,000 people in more than 90 First Nation communities have received COVID-19 vaccine so far, with doses expected soon in about a dozen more. The widespread shortage of vaccine has hampered the delivery of doses, but Hughes says the province has assured them the goal of delivering vaccine to all B.C. First Nations by the end of March is still possible.

Clayton had his own close call after testing positive for the virus. In early January, he was isolating at a Terrace hotel near Mills Memorial Hospital almost 150 kilometres south of his home. His father was also isolating in the hotel while his mom had been admitted to the hospital, which is one of three COVID-19 emergency response centres in the North. “She didn’t want to go to the hotel. She was scared to be by herself,” Clayton says. During a routine call, a nurse asked him to check his oxygen levels. They were dangerously low. She told him to call an ambulance.

It has been almost a year now that COVID-19 has disrupted so much of our lives. Sleep has been elusive for many. Thinking, worrying, over-thinking, stress, and isolation are just some things that cause sleepless nights. There are then two choices: stay awake or find strategies to fall asleep. One strategy that our family has tried is W̱ЌEL, W̱,ЌELIWENS which means “sleep meditation.” I have noticed that all of our sleep meditation options are in the English language. What I wanted to do for our children who attend ȽÁU, WELṈEW̱ Tribal School, located near Brentwood Bay and on W̱JOȽEȽP (Tsartlip) territory in W̱SÁNEĆ, was to create a sleep meditation in SENĆOŦEN, which is the name of our language.
