ADAM Tompkins lapses into lists of unionist rhetoric on the challenges of Scottish nationhood in support of his thesis that the current absence of active campaigning indicates the constitutional question is going into cold storage ( The signs of summer 2021 that it s all quiet on the second referendum front , The Herald, July 28). As a constitutional lawyer he must be aware of the many new European nations that have been created in the last 30 years. Estonia, Bulgaria, Slovenia and the Czech Republic are examples of small countries which have emerged and flourished following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Miraculously, all of these nations gained statehood by executing the economic and administrative tasks Mr Tompkins opines would be impossible or ruinously expensive in a newly independent Scotland. Apparently, he believes that alone among the nations of Europe, Scotland, with its outstanding natural and human resources, could not provide services, pensions and security for i

Analysis
A dip in national support for the Tories could unseat the Ayr MSP who has been there since 2000
Winner in 2016: John Scott (Conservative) AYR enjoys the dubious distinction of having been the first constituency to be represented at Scottish Parliament level by a Tory MSP, although there was an element of chance involved in that. The inaugural Holyrood election in 1999 had followed a similar pattern to the Westminster General Election two years earlier, with the Tories failing to trouble the scorer in the constituencies – but they had a remarkably near miss in Ayr, where their former local MP Phil Gallie fell short by just 25 votes.
Winner in 2016: Alasdair Allan (SNP) NA h-Eileanan an Iar, formerly known by the English name of the Western Isles, is the place that voted SNP before it was cool. In 1970, the constituency was the first to ever be taken by the SNP at a Westminster General Election, a feat that was even more remarkable given that the party hadn’t even bothered putting up a candidate there since 1951. Perhaps if the SNP were ever going to make the initial breakthrough, it had to be in an atypical seat like this which is often more or less disconnected from national trends.
