Some feral cat advocates are at odds with Wilkes-Barre City officials over cat shelters at Kirby Park.
Advocates suspect the Wilkes-Barre animal control officer has been removing feral cat shelters they placed in the park to help the felines survive frigid February weather.
City officials say animal control officer Adam Olver was doing his job, enforcing a city ordinance that bans luring or feeding feral animals. They say their duty to protect the public from health hazards supersedes the well-being of feral animals.
Feral cat advocate Donna Fountain said last week that advocates have been placing cat shelters in the park for years, and they visit the park âconsistently to make sure (the cats) are warm and fed. Most of them are fixed.â
