Impact Report 2019 | Greenpeace UK

How to begin a review of Greenpeace’s impact in 2020? It was a challenging year, when Covid-19 made the world around us unfamiliar and when so many of us faced great sadness and uncertainty. And yet, even in the midst of a global pandemic, some things remained inspiringly familiar. As we all became more aware than ever of the value of nature – and of the need to protect it – the dedication and determination of the whole Greenpeace community never wavered. If anything, in a year when we were vividly confronted with climate, nature and health emergencies, our staff and supporters responded with unprecedented energy.

Ship traffic dropped during first months of Covid pandemic

E-Mail Ship movements on the world s oceans dropped in the first half of 2020 as Covid-19 restrictions came into force, a new study shows. Researchers used a satellite vessel-tracking system to compare ship and boat traffic in January to June 2020 with the same period in 2019. The study, led by the University of Exeter (UK) and involving the Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System and the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (both in Spain), found decreased movements in the waters off more than 70 per cent of countries. Global declines peaked in April 2020, but by June - as Covid restrictions were eased in many countries - ship movements began to increase.

Photo: Special Arrangement/THE HINDU   S4S is promoting solar dehydration as a means to empower women farmers and reduce food waste Life is not easy for the ‘ugly ducklings’ of the agricultural world. For all the perfectly shaped fruits and vegetables that we buy from the green grocers, there are thousands left on their stalks to rot unharvested in the field simply because they do not meet the aesthetic criteria of retailers. Mumbai-based foodtech innovator Science 4 Society (S4S) Technologies has been working to cut down on this waste by promoting solar dehydration as a way to preserve such produce. In the wake of the lockdown, the company, founded in 2014 by young entrepreneur Vaibhav Tidke along with collegemates Ganesh Bhere, Tushar Gaware, Shital Somani, Ashwin Pawade, Nidhi Pant and Swapnil Kokate, has empowered 2,700 women farmers and 200 micro-entrepreneurs near Aurangabad by training them in dehydration of natural produce.

Sleep hygiene should be integrated into epilepsy diagnosis and management - study

E-Mail Children with epilepsy sleep poorly compared to healthy children, and are more likely to experience disruptions such as night terrors, sleep walking or sleep disordered breathing, according to a new study. A team at the University of Birmingham s Centre for Human Brain Health analysed 19 published studies on sleep and epilepsy in children and adolescents to try to better understand and articulate the links between them. Their findings, published in Sleep Medicine Reviews, highlight the significantly poorer sleep experienced by children and adolescents with epilepsy, and present a strong argument for screening children for sleep problems as an integral part of diagnosis and management of the condition.
