A TWO-TIME mayor, long-time councillor and founder of one of Bridport s biggest fishing businesses, has passed away at the age of 88. Tributes have been paid to pillar of the Bridport community , Clifford Samways, after he passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 7. Mr Samways was best known for founding Samways Fish Shop and serving Bridport as mayor on two occasions. He began his journey as a fisherman in 1956, going on to found Samways in 1961. He was heavily involved in the progression of Bridport, playing a big part in finding housing for residents whilst serving on the town and district councils and helping to deliver a swimming pool to the town. He was even recognised by The Queen for his works and endeavours in the public arena, attending a garden party at Buckingham Palace.

Enjoy a good old fashioned sing song in Bridport - with a surprising twist. As part of this, Jane Silver-Corren will be sharing and teaching songs all over Bridport throughout the coming week. On Tuesday, May 25 Jane will be in West Bay near the playground from 11am until 3pm and on Friday, May 28 she will be near the Millennium Green from 11am until 3pm. On other days she ll be in the North Allington and Coronation Road area. Jane invites people to go and join her and sing along. Social distancing rules for singing and performing will be adhered too.
LOCAL lockdown heroes in the food and drink industry which have adapted to meet the challenges of the past year were celebrated in an awards ceremony. The Bridport Local Food Group has announced the results of the 2021 Food and Drink Lockdown Hero Awards. The awards had six categories in which residents were encouraged to nominate their favourite local businesses. The Producers, Wholesalers and Caterers Award was scooped up by outdoor and event caterers, Hungry Mule Catering. The organisation is run out of Dreadnought Trading Estate by Sam Hill - throughout the pandemic Hungry Mule has found new ways to operate including a popular Friday night rib shop.
