Grateful for its loyal customers, La Lupita keeps cooking amid pandemic

By Mike Kinney Elder Hernandez, owner of La Lupita Mexican Eatery in Richmond’s Marina Bay neighborhood, has a message for his customers: “Thank you.” Many restaurants are either struggling or closing due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. While business has slowed at Hernandez’s family-run eatery at 2167 Meeker Ave., loyal customers have kept them cooking. The ability to offer takeout and delivery has helped. “I like cooking for the community,” said Hernandez, who runs Lupita with his wife Elsia Figueroa and brother, Misael Gutierrez. “My customers are very important to me. We cook fresh food that is healthy and we take great pride in that.”
