The winner gets an MLW Heavyweight Championship shot anytime, anywhere… A video listed some of the Battle Riot entrants… The broadcast team was Rich Bocchini and Saint Laurent…
Cesar Duran (f/k/a Dario Cueto) made his entrance while a “lucha” chant broke out. Duran entered the ring with a microphone and said he’s been told that the venue is historic and the people of Philadelphia understand lucha libre. The “lucha” chant grew louder. Duran said he’s been told that the city could be a good place to build a lucha temple.
Saturday featured the official televised return of MLW with Battle Riot III, their annual 40-man no DQ battle royal with unique rules (eliminations are over the top, pin or submission, 60 second entries) that crowns the no. 1 contender for the World title.
The show was taped in Philadelphia, PA, on July 10th.
The debut of Cesar Duran
We opened with the El Jefe of Azteca Underground, Cesar Duran, who got a great response from the Philadelphia crowd. Chants of lucha rang around the 2300 Arena as he made his way to the ring. He tried to turn on the crowd, but they were having none of it and just cheered him on. He said he will be promoting fights in MLW under his Azteca Underground banner and is now the official MLW matchmaker at the behest of Court Bauer.
ECM s Report From Battle Riot III
My best friend and I had purchased tickets to Battle Riot III last February during Fightland. Then the world turned upside down and it ended up not happening. When MLW announced their return to Philadelphia on July 10th, my one ask was that it be what we were originally promised, Battle Riot. Well, it happened, and we couldn t have been happier.
When we got there, we ran into some complications. Namely, the seats my best friend and I had bought had been double-sold. Not a good start to the night. I was afraid this would happen due to the length between when tickets originally went on sale and when the event was announced and tickers went back on sale. But a solution was found: my best friend and I were given front-row seats on the opposite side of where we were originally going to sit, so it all worked out.
