Jermall Charlo had a tougher than expected time in his last ring appearance. The current WBC middleweight belt holder took on fringe contender, Juan Macias Montiel, in the backyard of Charlo in Houston, Texas on June 19th.
While the stoppage was expected, Montiel left many with their jaws wide open as he pushed the truculent knockout artist like never before. Despite his struggles, Charlo still cruised to a unanimous decision win on the night. Immediately after, Charlo turned his attention to current unified super middleweight titlist, Canelo Alvarez.
For a number of years now, Charlo has called for a showdown against the Mexican product. But while he’s made it clear that he’ll face Alvarez at any weight class, former super middleweight champion David Benavidez continues to interject. The two-time belt holder has made it clear that he wants Charlo as soon as possible.

Another weekend, more winners, more wondering what’s next. And another weekend where there’s no clear answer in really any case, but a lot of possibilities, some of which could even be interesting!
Emanuel Navarrete
Navarrete’s win over Christopher Diaz saw him retain the WBO featherweight title, but also considering the possibility that he might have to move up to 130 to get a big fight, which is what he says he wants.
He does sound like he’d rather stay at 126, unifying with WBC titlist Gary Russell Jr or WBA titlist Leo Santa Cruz. Neither is likely; both are PBC fighters. Santa Cruz is a deep Haymon loyalist, and despite what Russell has ever said about being a promotional free agent, he just keeps fighting only on PBC cards.

Opponent Ronald Ellis, who had some scale issues of his own last year when he attempted to move to middleweight, came in at the same weight. Top lightweight contender Isaac Cruz (134 lbs.) and late-notice foe Matias Romero (134.8 lbs.) had no issues, and neither did openers Jamontay Clark (154.6 lbs.) and Terrell Gausha (154.4 lbs.).
Benavidez (23-0, 20 KO) infamously came in well over the limit for a planned WBC title defense against Roamer Alexis Angulo in August 2020, becoming one of very few modern boxers to lose the same belt twice for different out-of-ring reasons. He’s still likely bound for light heavyweight sooner rather than later, but for now, he remains a genuine super middleweight.
