Council holds rezoning hearings

The Rainsville City Council on Monday held public hearings to discuss the rezoning of Ranch Road, Peaceful Acres subdivision and Britany Owens subdivision. Mayor Rodger Lingerfelt said notices were sent out to adjoining land residents and opened the floor for discussion. Housing partners John McCallie and Carlton W. Edwards of Scottsboro attended the hearing with an interest in the rezoning of Ranch Road from M-1 Industrial to R-3 Residential. “We have a contract to purchase this property and have requested the rezoning,” said McCallie. “Our purchase of the properties contingent with the Alabama Boys and Girls Sheriff Ranches. He said they plan on building a “little bit more upper scale homes” on larger size lots.

Rainsville focuses on beautification

The Rainsville City Council is tackling beautification with plans to demolish unsafe buildings. Councilman Rickey Byrum said there are 40-50 such structures throughout the town and it will take some time to clear them. He said it is important to prevent rodents that spread disease from inhabiting old structures belonging to absentee owners and areas overgrown with tress and tall grass. Following the passage of Resolution 02-18-2021(D), certified inspectors will test the unsafe buildings for asbestos and other banned materials so they can be safely burned. “We’ve got to start somewhere,” Byrum said, proposing the resolution that passed unanimously.

Rainsville Council holds budget workshop

The Rainsville City Council held a budget workshop Thursday night to discuss possible changes to the 2020-21 budget. City Accountant Betty Holcomb briefed the council on the calculations she made for the budget adjustments while asking for the councils input and recommendations. Holcomb said by the end of the 2020 budget, the city came out about what they budgeted for the year. “We actually had more revenues than what we had budgeted,” she said. “The majority of that would be in our gross receipts tax.” Councilman Arlan Monk” Blevins and Mayor Rodger Lingerfelt brought up the upgrading of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for the Rainsville Wastewater Treatment Plant.
