Fenton area mourns death of local icon

The Fenton area lost a local icon Wednesday, April 21 with the death of Robert G. Harris Sr. He was 97 years old.  Harris, a lifelong resident of Fenton, had authored seven books on Fenton’s history. He also wrote the novel, “Many Come, Few Are Chosen,” about the U.S. Marines.  Harris graduated from Fenton High School in 1941. He went on to earn his Ph.D. and was the commencement speaker for the FHS Class of 1972. At the time, he was president of Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas.  In a 2019 Times story written by Vera Hogan (retired associate editor), Harris had said with the 150th commencement for FHS coming up in 2022, he would be willing to give a commencement speech again, if the school would have him.

Show your patriotism

The Fenton Kiwanis Club is offering community members the opportunity to proudly display an American flag on their home lawn for all 2021 patriotic holidays — Memorial Day through Flag Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day through Patriots’ Day and Veterans’ Day.  Fenton Kiwanis members will post a flag on your lawn for the designated holidays and then take it down afterwards.  Mark Suchowski, Fenton Kiwanis president, said, “What a great way to show your pride and display the colors — while Fenton Kiwanis does the work.”  All profits from the Kiwanis Flag Project will be utilized to fund Fenton Kiwanis’ many community service projects, especially scholarships for KEY Club members at Lake Fenton High School and Fenton High School.
