Nails on a chalkboard : Residents complain about squeaky TTC streetcar

TORONTO Residents living on a small street in the heart of downtown Toronto say they have been plagued by an incredibly loud and squeaky TTC streetcar. Since Sunday, residents say the noise has been non-stop. Streetcars are being diverted off of Queen Street and through the McCaul loop, located Grange Park, due to construction. “It sounds like nails on a chalkboard, times like a thousand,” William Lam, a resident living on McCaul Street, told CTV News Toronto. “It s high piercing. It just gets right through in the earplugs you re wearing while trying to sleep, into your meetings while you re trying to work,” Lam added. “I work at home … and for the people living above the actual tracks and the turnaround I don t know how they can actually deal with it.”

Residents upset about screeching streetcars being diverted from Queen Street West

Published Friday, January 8, 2021 12:34PM EST Last Updated Friday, January 8, 2021 1:22PM EST Residents in a Queen West neighbourhood say that they are being kept up at all hours by the sounds of “screeching” streetcars that are being diverted from their usual route due to construction. As of Jan. 3, the TTC has been directing all of its westbound 501 streetcars to turn around using a loop on McCaul Street due to a major construction project at the intersection of King, Queen and Roncesvalles in the city’s west end. The TTC says that the change has been necessary in order to allow them to preserve as much streetcar service as possible but it has infuriated some residents in nearby condominium and apartment buildings, who say they are now being inundated with the screeching sounds of turning streetcars.
