Michigan is first in country to license tribal casinos for online gambling
The sportsbook at MGM Grand Detroit has been shut down with the casino since last month due to state restrictions meant to stop spread of COVID-19.
The expected launch of online gambling in Michigan has been pushed to mid-January, leaving casinos champing at the bit to feed pent-up demand and stabilize income loss due to the pandemic.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board, which is overseeing the implementation of online betting, recently issued provisional licenses earlier this month to 15 online betting providers.

DETROIT (WXYZ) â MotorCity Casino Hotel announced that it will be opening back up on Wednesday, Dec. 23 at 1 p.m. after being closed for the past month.
The casino closed in mid-November during the 3-week pause, which was then extended by 12 days, but is allowed to reopen under the latest guidelines from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
It could have opened at midnight on Monday, Dec. 21, but said it will open Wednesday so that all returning employees will get COVID-19 tests.

DETROIT – The MotorCity Casino Hotel in Detroit is preparing to open its doors to the public on Dec. 23 thanks to loosened coronavirus restrictions announced this week.
The MotorCity Casino Hotel will reopen at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 23, officials said.
All casino and hotel employees will reportedly be tested for COVID-19 before the reopening date. Officials also say that health and safety protocols will be implemented upon reopening, including:
Mandatory face masks
Social distancing throughout the casino by “shutting down slot machines, removing seating at table games and using plexiglass barriers”
