Inmate killed at John Benoit Detention Center in Indio
on Wednesday, according to the Riverside County Sheriff s Department.
The Correctional Investigations Bureau and the Central Homicide Unit identified Luke Hanchette, 42, of Hemet, as the suspect. He remains at the John Benoit Detention Center. Prior to the homicide, Hanchette was being held on charges including assault.
The victim was identified as John Hemmer, 48, of South Dakota. Hemmer was charged with nine felonies, including several counts of infliction of corporal injury on a spouse/cohabitant, torture and attempted murder. He was accused of physically abusing and strangling his girlfriend until she was unconscious during a road trip two years ago, according to 2019 report from NBC Palm Springs.

An investigation is underway in a Palm Desert area intersection following a shooting Thursday night. It happened around 10:45 p.m. in the area of Varner Road and Washington Street.

On July 15, 2021, at 10:36pm, Palm Desert Sheriff Station deputies responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon near the 78000 block of Varner Rd., Palm Desert. On arrival, deputies located an adult male laying in the roadway and determined he was the victim of a shooting. The victim was pronounced deceased on scene. Investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Central Homicide Unit responded and assumed the investigation. The investigation is ongoing with no further information available at this time. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending next of kin notification.
Man found dead in Palm Desert; Homicide investigation underway
A homicide investigation was underway today after body was found in Palm Desert.
Deputies responded about 5 p.m. Sunday to a call about a man discovered dead in the 44700 block of San Luis Rey Avenue, according to the Riverside County Sheriff s Department.
Sgt. Richard Carroll said the man had suffered traumatic injuries, and investigators with the sheriff s Central Homicide Unit were summoned to the scene.
The victim s name was not immediately released.
