A grant of $1,087,190 from the federal Department of Transportation will pay 80 percent of the cost of the project, which is budgeted at $1,321,487. Four additional sections of the improved trail that extends to Ferguson Lane in Wurtsboro will be put out to bid at a later date.
The finished trail will not be open to motor vehicles, and will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The DOT program that provided funding is designed to create safe routes that do not use existing roads. Mamakating s trail connects residential areas of Wurtsboro with businesses, the library, an elementary school, the town government center and the Basha Kill.
