The first in-person Des Moines City Council meeting in more than 15 months was cut short Monday evening after crouching council members voted on dozens of agenda items amid the din of crowd chants and dropped a planned public comment period.
The meeting was the first conducted under new security measures that included screening entrants with metal detectors, limiting capacity in the council chambers to 25 people and keeping other attendees in an overflow room. City Council meetings have become increasingly confrontational in the past year, especially regarding funding and conduct of the city s police department.
U.S. Capitol building, National Mall, surrounding areas
The nation s capitol was quiet Sunday amid unprecedented security measures as Americans braced for possible violence ahead of the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden.
More reporters and law enforcement members were present than protesters. Barricades blocked any path toward the Capitol several blocks in front of the grounds.
Metal fences standing at least 10 feet high prohibit entrance to the National Mall, as does the presence of the National Guard and Secret Service.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser asked Americans not to come to the capital for inauguration, citing concerns over violent protests and COVID-19.
