Two girls – Tracy and Melisa, ages 13 and 15 respectively – are typical examples. Having lost their parents, they traveled from their home in Gokwe, a small rural community in Midlands Province, to Kadoma, a busy mining town west of Harare. There, they joined six other girls, all of whom are school dropouts, to rent a room where they provide sex services to some of the thousands of men who go there to mine gold. Many of those clients look specifically for very young girls, believing they are less likely to have sexually transmitted diseases. “A lot of gold panners scramble for our services because they think we are innocent,” Tracy says.

Police arrest Herald journalist

JOURNALIST Michael Magoronga, who writes for the State-owned  Herald and  Chronicle newspapers from the Midlands Province, was on 25 January 2021 arrested by police in the Midlands town of Kwekwe who accused him of using an expired Zimbabwe Media Commission-issued accreditation card. Magoronga was arrested while taking pictures in the city centre as part of a story that he is working on. He was detained for more than an hour at Kwekwe Central Police Station and later released without charges after the police said they had confirmed that journalists are still allowed to use the expired 2019 accreditation cards. Media watchdog MISA Zimbabwe said it notes with concern that Magoronga’s arrest comes after police in Kwekwe assured journalists they would not be arrested over the expired accreditation cards.

National hero status for SB Moyo  - Zimbabwe Situation

National hero status for SB Moyo  Joseph Madzimure and Africa Moyo Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Lieutenant General Sibusiso Busi Moyo (Retired), has been declared a national hero. Lt Gen Moyo succumbed to Covid-19-related complications on Wednesday at a Harare medical facility. He was 59. Defence and War Veterans Affairs Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, who is also Zanu PF national chairperson, was dispatched to the Moyo family home in Harare yesterday evening by President Mnangagwa to deliver the message. She said Lt Gen Moyo  will be buried at the National Heroes Acre on a date to be advised. Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri said President Mnangagwa and the party saw it fit to honour Dr Moyo as national hero for the contributions he made during the liberation struggle and after independence.

CARE offices in Mozambique and Zimbabwe prepare to respond as Storm Eloise looks set to worsen into a Cyclone over the weekend

This same area is now in the path of Cyclone Eloise. Maputo, Mozambique, 21, January 2021 - CARE Mozambique is currently working to secure premises, equipment, vehicles and archives as well as evacuate staff ahead of the arrival of tropical storm Eloise which has now developed into a potentially devastating cyclone, that is forecast to hit parts of southern and Central Mozambique early on the 23rd January before moving south to Zimbabwe. CARE Zimbabwe staff are also closely monitoring the situation as Eloise is expected to make landfall there the 24/25th of January. CARE has surge capacity in country and prepositioned stocks to quickly respond as the need arises.
