TAKOMA PARK, Md. Authorities in Maryland say they have charged an off-duty Pentagon police officer with second-degree murder in the shootings of two men outside a condominium building in Takoma Park.
The Washington Post reported Friday that the officer has been identified as David Hall Dixon. He lived in the condo building.
Police had said that Dixon told responding officers that he engaged with suspects of a car break-in. He said they failed to follow his direction and attempted to flee. A short time later, two people with gunshot wounds arrived at a hospital. Both died.

David Hall Dixon told investigators he opened fire after three men nearly ran him over in a Lexus shortly after he found them breaking into a car, but the investigation concluded the officer actually discharged his gun after the danger had passed, according to charging documents. An autopsy showed the bullets struck the victims in the back.

An off-duty Pentagon police officer shot and killed two people he believed had broken into a car in Maryland on Wednesday morning. (CNN)A Pentagon police officer was charged with two counts of second-degree murder Friday in the shooting deaths of two men in Maryland this week, authorities said.
Officer David Hall Dixon was off-duty at the time of the shooting. He was taken into custody Friday morning without incident, Takoma Park police said.
Dixon faces two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of use of a handgun in commission of a felony, and reckless endangerment in connection with the shooting deaths of Dominique Williams, 32, of Hyattsville, and James Lionel Johnson, 38, of District Heights.
