I Care a Lot : The Shocking True Stories Behind the Netflix Movie
On 2/24/21 at 7:25 AM EST
I Care a Lot is the latest movie to hit the top of the Netflix charts, with viewers finding themselves shockingly compelled by the actions of the villainous guardian Marla Grayson (played by Rosamund Pike) and the rest of the movie s gruesome parade of horrible people.
Many of Marla s actions seem like the fevered imaginings of a Hollywood screenwriter trying to write a truly despicable villain, as she forces vulnerable old people under her conservatorship and then steals from them.
Marla s business, however, has some parallels with some real-life stories of elder abuse.

Psychiatric hospitals, nursing homes, and other long-term-care facilities have served as chilling backdrops to some of film’s most arresting psychological thrillers. But the foreboding lighthouse of
Shutter Island and the macabre, labyrinthine hospital of
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest pale in comparison with both movies’ animating horrors: the wretched treatment of the people trapped within. These works dramatize the cruelties that hospital administrators and caretakers exact upon their patients, especially those who have been admitted against their will, with Hitchcockian dread. In doing so, they challenge conventional wisdom about mental illness, authority, and the ethics of condemning people to isolation.

AISHA HARRIS, HOST: In the new Netflix movie I Care A Lot, Rosamund Pike plays a slick grifter who repeatedly tricks her way into becoming the legal guardian of elderly individuals and then drains their bank accounts. It s a well-oiled scheme until she messes with the wrong target, a woman with a dangerous background played by Dianne Wiest. It s an acidic comedy thriller with no shortage of plot twists and turns. Plus, it s got Peter Dinklage and Chris Messina having fun while playing shady characters. I m Aisha Harris. And today we re talking about I Care A Lot on POP CULTURE HAPPY HOUR from NPR, so don t go away.
