Media Fondazione Cortina 2021 Faivre Grabs giant slalom gold as teammate Pinturault crashes out Cortina d’Ampezzo (BL), 19 February 2021 (MOREL) – Mathieu Faivre (FRA) won gold in the men’s giant slalom at the Cortina 2021 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships on Friday, following an uncharacteristic fall on the second run by his teammate, and race leader, Alexis Pinturault (FRA). Pinturault had been heavy favourite for the title pre-race and his odds had shortened even further after he put down a flawless first run, finishing four tenths of a second ahead of the second-placed Luca De Aliprandini (ITA). Top of the overall giant slalom World Cup rankings, and dominating the discipline going into the world championships, Pinturault has barely put a GS ski wrong all season. But he faltered in what should have been the biggest moment of his career, blowing out of a race for the first time since March 2018.

French skier Faivre says not so easy to enjoy GS gold

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy – Mathieu Faivre seemed somewhat uncomfortable during the winner’s ceremony. Standing between the silver and bronze medalists after winning the giant slalom at the skiing world championships on Friday, the Frenchman kept looking over his shoulder back toward the course. Faivre was trying to get a glimpse of Alexis Pinturault, his teammate and the pre-race favorite for gold. Pinturault, however, was still high up on the hill, trying to deal with what had just happened. Luca de Aliprandini (ITA), Mathieu Faivre (FRA) and Marco Schwarz (AUT). “I am kind of sad for Alexis, of course. It would have been amazing to be both on the podium,” Faivre said. “It was not so easy to enjoy it. But for sure I am really proud of it. I am really proud of my team, of my mindset.”
