It’s been a contentious issue for years – even decades – but the Road Commission is again turning to the public for input on how to ease traffic congestion. Over the years it’s been referred to by many names, including the Hammond-Hartman Corridor and “the bypass.” But now “The Boardman River Corridor Study” is focusing on three long-term alternatives to move traffic more smoothly and avoid congestion. OHM Traffic Engineering Consultant Steve Dearing says, “This is a planning study to try to identify whether there’s significant need for additional east-west mobility. ....
“This is a ticking time bomb,” said Marc Gaden, spokesperson for the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, a U.S-Canadian fishery management entity that is leading the project and is a party to the lawsuit. “The city needs to know, one way or another, how to proceed.” FishPass is the capstone to a decades-long effort to restore fish habitat on the Boardman River, which flows through Traverse City. After three dam removals upstream, city leaders had planned to replace the last remaining dam on the Boardman an old mill dam in downtown Traverse City with a new barrier. That barrier would include a research facility where scientists would test technology designed to allow some fish species to pass upstream beyond the dam, while locking others downstream. ....

The State Theater and Bijou by the Bay have been closed since Michigan s shutdown last year. The Traverse City Film Festival has received $933,000 in federal coronavirus relief to help restart its two movie theaters and continue its annual film festival. The festival s founder filmmaker Michael Moore says without the grant, the organization may have folded. “I would say without any hint of hyperbole here that this million dollar grant from our federal government has literally saved the Traverse City Film Fest and our theaters,” he says. The northern Michigan festival attracts film makers from around the world, bringing in around $20 million dollars to the local economy and supporting two independent movie theaters. ....
