End of an era: Thrifty Oil to close full-service station that has served Thomasville area for nearly 80 years

THOMASVILLE â When Larry Crouse retires June 25, Thrifty Oil will close after nearly 80 years as a full-service station that generations of residents relied on in the Thomasville area.
Crouse, 72, who became known through the years for his honesty and humor, described his decision to retire as bittersweet.
Some of his earliest memories revolve around the station and garage his father, Jack Crouse, owned and operated at 1 National Highway starting in 1942. Jack s brother, Buck, and their father, Melvin, did major mechanical work in a shop next door. The business was named National Motor Co. until Jack combined the two companies into Thrifty Oil. At one time the business had six employees, operated seven days a week and offered extras like selling tires and washing cars. ....

There’s a new social network making waves, attracting high-profile business leaders and celebrities alike. Described as a modern version of AM talk radio democratising a digital society, Clubhouse is an invite-only audio chat app where users can tune in to interviews, conversations and discussions on different topics.
Clubhouse, which launched last year, is providing thought leaders and experts a casual space to connect. It can be likened to a podcast, except that everything is happening in real time and there’s no editing, jingles or transitions, says Ben Wagner, head of PR and marketing at VMLY&R. When Blue Jays rights-holder Sportsnet decided to simulcast TV broadcasts on its radio network this year, it left Toronto as the only big-league team without a dedicated radio broadcast crew.
The network s commentators had to pivot from a television-only style to one that would be inviting for radio listeners as well. Rob Corte, vice-president of Sportsnet and NHL Productions, is pleased with the early results.
So far, so good, Corte said in a recent interview. We ve had a few discussions about how we can make it a little bit more radio at times without compromising the television product. But it is a fluid process and we re constantly tweaking it and looking for ways to get better as the season goes on. ....
