NEW BEDFORD Some city councilors are calling for the increase of police patrols in the historic district and for Mayor Jon Mitchell to reverse his decision to close the downtown police station on Pleasant Street. There is not much time, however. City administrators plan to close the downtown police station and open the new South End Public Safety Center on Brock Avenue next month, said Neil Mello, a spokesperson for the city. Councilor-at-large Brian Gomes, who chairs the Committee on Public Safety and Neighborhoods, said he filed the motion because he has been hearing complaints from business owners downtown.
