Chicago man charged with attempted sexual assault of NU student

A 20-year-old Chicago man was arrested Tuesday afternoon related to an attempted sexual assault of a Northwestern student, Evanston Police Department announced in a Wednesday news release. The man was arrested in Glencoe when Glencoe Public Safety responded to a well-being check and charged with attempted aggravated sexual assault and aggravated battery, the release said. He was arrested because he matched a distinct description EPD provided to other local law enforcement departments.  The attempted sexual assault occurred on Tuesday morning around 6:30 a.m., when an NU student was approached from behind between Clark Street and Orrington Avenue. The attacker pushed the student to the ground and tried to assault them before a bystander attempted to intervene.

Community Safety Advisory Board co-chairs talk racial justice at NU

Feinberg Prof. Clyde Yancy and Chief Diversity Officer Robin Means Coleman discussed racial justice at Northwestern during Wednesday’s Faculty Senate meeting.  Yancy, co-chair of NU’s Community Safety Advisory Board, said senior leadership called him back in November indicating that the University was “at an impasse” when it came to campus safety. Since then, NU has released two external reviews of University Police and the Department of Safety and Security. The first report detailed UP’s budget and operations. The second reassessed DSS’s responsibilities, including its role in student mental health response. Instead of placing mental health responsibilities on campus police, Yancy said, NU may reroute that authority elsewhere as a result of the assessment’s findings.

Northwestern hires Sarah Klaper as first University ombudsperson

Northwestern has named Sarah Klaper as its first ombudsperson following a national search, according to a Thursday news release. An ombudsperson serves as a “neutral, independent, impartial and confidential” resource for members of the community, offering assistance on academic and work-related issues and conflicts. This includes directing individuals to the appropriate University policies and resources or acting as a third-party conciliator for two conflicting parties. Klaper, who previously served as Northern Illinois University’s ombudsperson for nine years, will start at NU on Aug. 1. She will report directly to the provost and is responsible for creating an Office of the Ombudsperson.
