30-year old penguin, 20-year-old otter die at Pueblo Zoo

Two of the longest-living members of the Pueblo Zoo s animal crew have died, leaving behind fond memories for those who cared for them. Thelma, estimated to be about 20 years old, was a three-legged North American river otter; and Sallie, 30, was an African penguin who helped found the Pueblo Zoo s African penguin colony. Both animals died early this June. Brittany Merlo is the primary zookeeper for the otter and penguin exhibits at the Pueblo Zoo, and said that while she misses both Thelma and Sallie, she believes that it was time for both of the matriarchs to pass on.
