‘Abduction’ case of Afghan envoy’s daughter ‘to be solved in 72 hours’

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid on Sunday said a criminal complaint had been filed over the alleged kidnapping of the Afghan Ambassador to Pakistan Najibullah Alikhel’s daughter and would be resolved within 72 hours.
On Saturday, after reports of the alleged abduction hit social media, the Foreign Office, responding to media queries regarding the incident, said the daughter of the ambassador “was assaulted while riding a rented vehicle”.
In an interview on Sunday with Geo News’ Naya Pakistan, the interior minister cast aspersions on the circumstances of the incident and said she had not been abducted.

Afghanistan said late on Sunday that President Ashraf Ghani has instructed the country’s foreign ministry to withdraw diplomatic staff from Pakistan until those involved in ‘kidnapping’ of the Afghan ambassador in Islamabad are arrested and put on trial.
“Following the abduction of the daughter of Afghan ambassador in Pakistan, the leadership of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has recalled the Afghan envoy and other senior diplomats from Islamabad back to Kabul until all the security threats are removed,” the Afghan foreign ministry said in a statement, demanding the arrest and prosecution of the kidnappers.

In a blow to an already fragile relationship between the two neighbours, Afghanistan on Sunday decided to withdraw its ambassador and senior diplomats from Pakistan, a move that Islamabad termed as unfortunate and regrettable .
The decision by Kabul to recall its ambassador in Islamabad and other diplomats came in reaction to the reported abduction of the daughter of the envoy on Friday.
Selsela Alikhil, the daughter of Najibullah Alikhil, Afghanistan’s ambassador to Pakistan, was allegedly kidnapped and held for several hours by unknown assailants who left her with injuries and rope marks.
