Nana Addo nominates Mohammed Awal to head Tourism, Arts and Culture ministry

The Ghanaian showbiz fraternity has been anxious to see who heads the ministry following the names of Mark Okraku Mante and Obour being whispered among industry players for the job. In a press statement with a list of candidates Nana Addo has nominated for ministerial positions, Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Awal has been named to take the position which was previously held by Hon Barbara Oteng Gyasi who lost her parliamentary seat in the 2020 elections. Dr Awal is not new to the Creative Arts industry despite serving as Minister of Business Development of Ghana since 2017 in the previous Nana Addo term of office. The GIJ alumnus holds a Masters in International Journalism from the University of Wales, UK.

PIAC elects Professor Kwame Adom-Frimpong as new Chairman

LISTEN JAN 21, 2021 The Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) has elected Professor Kwame Adom-Frimpong as its new chairman. Professor Adom-Frimpong, who represents the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG) on the Committee, was elected in a unanimous decision by the Committee, drawn from 13 nominating institutions. A statement from PIAC said he would steer the affairs of PIAC as Chairman for one year, having taken over from Mr Noble Wadzah, whose membership tenure on the Committee expired at the end of last year. Commenting on his election as Chairman of PIAC, Professor Adom-Frimpong expressed gratitude to all Committee Members for the confidence reposed in him and pledged his commitment to ensure that PIAC delivered effectively on its mandate.

Tributes continue to pour in for Tun Salleh Abas

PETALING JAYA: Tributes continue to pour in for the late Tun Salleh Abas who passed away on Saturday (Jan 16). Former Malaysian Bar president Datuk Mah Weng Kwai described Salleh as a man who believed in and protected judicial independence. “I had the honour of serving as a Deputy Public Prosecutor in 1978 under the late Tun Salleh when he was the Solicitor General. Through the years I have known him to be a pillar of strength in upholding the cause of justice. Regrettably, Tun paid a heavy price for standing by his principles, said Mah. Salleh had passed away at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu in the early morning of Saturday of pneumonia. He was admitted to hospital a day earlier after testing positive for Covid-19. He was 91.

The body of Mohamed Salleh, 91, who died of pneumonia at 3.20am, was taken to the cemetery at about 10.15 am. The burial process was handled by some 10 personnel from the Terengganu Health Department who were wearing personal protective equipment (PPE). However, his family members and journalists were not allowed to be at the burial ground. ADVERTISEMENT His son-in-law Wan Pauzi Yahya said Mohamed Salleh, who was Chairman of as-Salihin Trustee Berhad, was admitted to Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ) here on Thursday after he tested positive for Covid-19.

Salleh’s demise from pneumonia at 3.20am yesterday came a day after he was admitted to the intensive care unit of Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah in Kuala Terengganu after testing positive for Covid-19. Tributes to the small-sized, humble man, who definitely left some big shoes to fill, poured in immediately from personalities in the legal fraternity. In extending her condolences to his family, Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat said Salleh had contributed so much to the Judiciary during his tenure as Lord President, calling his demise a great loss to the Judiciary and the nation. A native of Kampung Raja, Besut, Terengganu, Salleh was a law graduate from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and had a Masters in International Law and Constitution from the University of London.
